Does dental insurance cover porcelain crowns?

While Medisave cannot be used for dental crowning, most insurance companies in Singapore cover such treatments no matter what the material of the crown is - porcelain, metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal. The only case when your insurance may not pay for crowns is if they are requested for cosmetic purposes. Before your crowning procedure, it is best to contact your insurance provider to see if your plan covers this type of service.

The coverage types offered by most insurance companies in Singapore include basic dental care and major dental care. In general, basic dental treatments involve a regular examination, routine cleanings, dental fillings, X-rays, root canal treatment and so on. Major dental care services are periodontitis treatment, orthodontic work, crowns, bridges, etc. The dental insurance plan for routine dental work is usually cheaper than the cost of major dental treatment, so coverage for dental crowns is likely to be more expensive. It means you could expect higher premiums for expensive and long-term procedures like orthodontics.

The crown will often be covered by half of the cost of treatment by dental insurance.
